Porto’s Bakery & Cafe

A very generous co-worker brings Porto’s into the office every couple of weeks and this morning was one of these occasions.  Porto’s is pretty far out of the way to patron so this is pretty much the only time many of us get to enjoy the pastries and, of course, a potato ball.

A little history on the famous Porto’s…It all started back in 1960 when Rosa Porto began perfecting here recipes and selling to her friends and neighbors, building a customer base in Mazanillo, Cuba.  Rosa and her family emigrated from Cuba to California and she continued in her baking venture.  Rosa’s Cuban cakes were later joined by French mousses, Italian sweets, and international savories.  Some of these include the trademarked Potato Balls and guava and cheese strudels.  Rosa Porto is now retired but her recipes and high standards remain as her legacy, including her motto, “quality is the number one ingredient in everything we do”. [excerpted from the website http://www.portosbakery.com]  The cakes from Porto’s are also always a work of art (even though they’re not being represented here).

Meat-stuffed potato croquettes are the perfect savory treat.

Apricot and cheese danish is another favorite.

… And when you can’t decide on just one flavor there is the cherry and apple danish in a sweet, number 8 shaped dough.

If you’ve never tried Porto’s I highly recommend you change that.  The bakery and cafe are worth the trip, and don’t forget to try a Potato Ball!
